Scrolling Prayer Beads
3d print, acrylic varnish, video, 2022
“sometimes i scroll through my feed like my grandma uses her prayer beads”
The prayer beads by Hojin Kang show interaction symbols from the digital world. Prayer beads exist in many different forms in religions such as Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. During a prayer or for inner contemplation, the fingers push the individual beads progressively further along a chain. Scrolling on a smartphone is a similar movement. Many find repetitive movements to be a calming activity and a way of immersion. Scrolling and swiping through endless suggestions of diverse content simulates a sense of inner contemplation.
Scrolling Prayer Beads are prayer beads for the social media generation; they reduce screen time while maintaining the calming feeling of scrolling.
